Suspended Animation (2014–15)

  • Site-specific furniture, nearest available flower, cinema projection lenses, metal halide arc lamp, motor, string, needle, wax, water, ice, tomato, aquarium pump, tubing, hot water pitcher

A meditation on the structure and affective tilt of our perceptions of time and complexity.

Spandex sheets soaked in wax and stretched take on a determined geometry due to the structure of their weaving. When unsupported they slowly collapse into ethereal and corporeal forms. The wax freezes their shape but only for a few minutes. A flower is imaged by lenses and an arc lamp, causing it to wilt and burn. Water is heated and circulates, melting wax and a large ice cube (containing a tomato exploded by freezing), and deposits accumulating skeins of wax, destroying the table in the process.
