Spectral Tomatoes (2014)

  • Spectral Tomato I

Tinted Plexiglas, tomatoes, American DJ lights, dichroic glass

The color of a real tomato is changed and reflected by tinted Plexiglas, rendering it simultaneously hyperreal and ghostly. Echoing the museum vitrine, sci fi, and minimalist sculptural tropes, the processes of modernism are applied to a tomato.

    Spectral Tomato II

Tinted Plexiglas, tomatoes, Sylvania fluorescent tube and ballast

Tomatoes, arranged from orange to red, are impaled on a fluorescent light. Illuminated from within, their structure is revealed. Linearity, seriality, and the readymade are contrasted with flesh, pierced, leaking, and cooked by the heat of the light.

    Spectral Tomato III

    Single-channel digital video, 16 minutes

A tomato is methodically injected with colored liquids and obsessively dissected into its components. Somewhere between performance, scientific experiment and B horror film, these actions make the tomato’s color and structure indeterminate, alien.
